Cape Verde doubled foreign investment in 2008

DAKAR, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) — Cape Verde, the northern African island state, attracted 2.639 billion euros (3.593 billion U.S. dollars) in direct foreign investment (DFI) in 2008, a rise of 129 percent from the previous year, according to statistics from the Cabo Verde Investimentos (CI).

Brazil pardons Cape Verde debt

The Brazilian government has pardoned more than 317.4 million euros in debts owed it by a series of countries, according to the report from the Brazilian Finance Ministry’s Secretariat of International Affairs released on December 25. Cape Verde is among the countries to benefit from the debt pardoning.

Studies for Cape Verde port expansion projects

Ghana election consolidates democracy

N THE end, the presidential run-off proved to be every bit as tight as the first round of voting on December 7th. On that occasion, the candidate of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akufo-Addo, triumphed by a very small margin over his main rival, John Atta Mills of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)—but not by enough votes to avoid a run-off. At the second time of asking, however, on December 28th, the result was reversed—by such a tiny number of votes that the electoral commission had to rerun the vote in one district just to make sure.

REPEATS are often disappointing. It is rare indeed to find a president in his second term with an approval rating of 80%, as Brazil’s Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva now enjoys. No American president since the second world war has managed it. In Latin America, only Colombia’s Álvaro Uribe at the height of his success last year against the FARC guerrillas has touched a similar level of adoration. So Lula, a pragmatic former trade-union leader, is entering his penultimate year in office in a position in which he ought to be able to do almost anything.
