The Brazil Trade Africa 2009 fair has been running since Tuesday in Johannesburg, organised by Apex-Brasil with the aim of increasing the participation of small and medium-sized companies in Brazilian exports (Macuahub).

Blue Wing Airways and Movement for Eco Tourism in Suriname (Mets) will start oerating from July a new service from Paramaribo to Albina on the French Guyana border. Albina will also serve as a mini-hub for further flights into the interior of the country (DWT).
A new airline, Surijet, announced plans for direct flights between Paramaribo and Accra, Ghana to serve as one of the scarce direct connections between the South American and African continents. The new company hopes to attract passengers from the Caribbean for African destinations and vice versa, without the need to travel through Europe (DWT).

Brazil pardons Cape Verde debt
In Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Economy, Ghana, Surinam on January 10, 2009 at 4:42 pmThe Brazilian government has pardoned more than 317.4 million euros in debts owed it by a series of countries, according to the report from the Brazilian Finance Ministry’s Secretariat of International Affairs released on December 25. Cape Verde is among the countries to benefit from the debt pardoning.

On that occasion, the candidate of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akufo-Addo, triumphed by a very small margin over his main rival, John Atta Mills of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)—but not by enough votes to avoid a run-off. At the second time of asking, however, on December 28th, the result was reversed—by such a tiny number of votes that the electoral commission had to rerun the vote in one district just to make sure.
