Fifth Portuguese Language Business Meeting

Fortaleza, Brazil, 10 Feb – The Fifth Portuguese Language Business Meeting, an initiative of the Council of Portuguese Chambers of Commerce in Brazil, will take place in Fortaleza on 28 and 29 September 2009, the Council announced in a statement.

Diplomat Arnaldo Andrade, Cape Verde’s ambassador to Portugal, is a member of a group of Portuguese-speaking ambassadors formalized Monday in Portuguese capital Lisbon under the auspices of Portuguese President Aníbal Cavaco Silva.

The Centro Cultural Brasil-Suriname celebrated it 25th anniversary. In the course of that period around 10.000 Surinamese were taught Portuguese.

IAMGold Rosebel Goldmine production in the first 9 months of 2008 production reached 236.000 ounce (7.340 kg). At an average market price of 800 USD, the mined amount values 189 million USD.

State owned telecoms company Telesur announced plans to invest in a second transatlantic cable to reduce its dependence on the troublesome Americas II cable. Telesur’s CEO Dirk Currie also announced an investment of 110 million USD in research, innovation, customer service and other fields for 2009.

Telesur’s call centre Telenamic, a joint venture with Dutch based Unamic, announced an expansion programme. The call center at Zonnebloemstraat will receive extra space for 170 staff in order to make it possible for 200 workers to operate simultaneously.

Later in the month Telesur started operations in the Netherlands, home to 335.000 citizens of Surinamese origin. Telesur now offers a chip with both Surinamese and Dutch mobile phone numbers, with roaming in the two countries at no extra cost.

Rik van Raveswaaij, Minister for Planning and Development, called for a strong gevernment investment programme in the face of the worldwide credit crisis. The statement should also be seen against the background of BHP-Billiton’s decision to withdraw a 700 million USD  investment for Surinam as well as lower worldmarket prices for oil, bauxite and gold.

State owned oil company Staatsolie started prospecting for oil in Surinam’s most western district, Nickerie.

The Surinam government publicly contemplated buying BHP-Billiton shares to be able to continue bauxite mining in the country after 2010.

165 companies participated in the yearly Surinam “Jaarbeurs”, organised by the Chamber of Commerce and Industries, KKF.

EU financing for the Surinam Business Forum and its Surinam Business Cecntre has been assured for 2009. After that both organisations will have to be self sufficient by way of contributions by members.

A Suriname trade mission reached India to improve commercial relations between the two countries.
